OUR HISTORY Nelson Surveying Inc. is a third-generation family owned and operated firm. We opened our doors for business in 1954 when Thomas W. Nelson founded NSI. His son, Larry Nelson began surveying as a young boy and took over as owner in 1982. Peter Nelson became a third-generation owner in 2017 and now has over 20 years of surveying experience. Over the years, NSI has built an extensive collection of surveying records that date back to the 1890’s. NSI is also constantly updating its equipment to provide precise data for its clients. We pride ourselves on utilizing modern instruments while staying rooted in the traditions of the past. This allows NSI to provide a superior service to their clients and sets them apart from other firms. We service most Counties in Northern Wisconsin and look forward to helping you out with your next surveying project!

THOMAS W. NELSON

Professional Land Surveyor “Ol’ Spyglass”

Tom grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Houghton. Tom cut his teeth on the survey crews for Lake Superior District Power Company shortly after high school and then served in WWII with the 133 Anti-Aircraft Battalion. In 1945 he returned to the power company running new service lines throughout northern WI and MI. By 1954 he began surveying on his own and founded Nelson Surveying, Inc. He spent the next 30 years laying the foundations of a successful business that was built on honesty and integrity.

LARRY T. NELSON

Professional Land Surveyor

Larry was born and raised in Ashland, WI. After high school he went on to get his Bachelor’s degree in Geology and Mathematics at the UW Eau Claire. Returning home in 1973, he began working full time for NSI. By 1982, he had acquired his professional license and purchased NSI from his father. Over the next 35 years, Larry expanded the coverage area and service capabilities of NSI. Building on his father’s foundation, Larry continued the high standard of service while integrating the latest technologies. He was also involved in the modernization of the surveying profession by helping establish the High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN) for GPS systems that is still used today.

PETER A. NELSON

Professional Land Surveyor

Peter was also born and raised in Ashland, WI. He began working for NSI in 1999 and later received his Associates Degree in Land Surveying from Nicolet Area Technical College in 2004. Over the next decade, he worked extensively on the field crew and participated in all other aspects of the firm. In 2014, Peter received his professional license and 3 years later, purchased the family firm. As a proud third generation owner, Peter strives to “follow in the footsteps” of his father and grandfather to continue serving Northern WI for years to come.
